The easiest symbolic connection to Christianity to make is when a character is willing to sacrifice his or her own life to save others or the world. In this movie both the main characters demonstrate this willingness, even to the point of succeeding (and yet thanks to some nifty magical time travel plotting, both survive to return in the next movie!).
